Shakespeare’s play “Macbeth” is set in medieval Scotland.  The three witches or “Weird Sisters” predict the rise and fall of Macbeth.  The play mentions three familiars: Greymalkin, a gray cat; Paddock, a toad; and Harpier, an owl.  These characters were perhaps inspired by the three Fates of classical mythology who control the life of every mortal: one spinning the metaphorical thread of life, one measuring its length and one cutting it at the allotted time.

There were about 4,000 prosecutions for witchcraft in Scotland, three times as many as in England.  75% of the accused were women.
