The Tragedy of Macbeth is a play by William Shakespeare, first published in 1623. Macbeth is a Scottish general under the rule of King Duncan. Three witches tell Macbeth that he will become king of Scotland. Macbeth, spurred on by his own ambition and his wife Lady Macbeth, murders Duncan and takes the throne. In theatre, dur to superstition, it is often called “The Scottish Play”.
