Weird sisters

Shakespeare’s play “Macbeth” is set in medieval Scotland.  The three Witches or “Weird Sisters” predict the rise and fall of Macbeth. The witches are often interpreted as representing the Fates of classical mythology.  The Old English word ‘wyrd’ or ‘weird’ means ‘fate’.

There were about 4,000 prosecutions for witchcraft in Scotland, three times as many as in England.  75% of the accused were women.
