I’m enjoying the BBC series of documentaries on Japanese culture very much.
A tokonoma is a built-in recess in a traditional Japanese reception room, where special objects, usually a calligraphic or pictorial scroll and a flower arrangement, are displayed artfully. The pillar on one side of the tokonoma is usually made of wood, specially prepared for the purpose.
