The Jacobite rising of 1745 – “the Forty-Five” – was an attempt by Charles Edward Stuart – “Bonnie Prince Charlie” – to regain the British throne for the exiled House of Stuart. The Battle of Culloden ended the uprising, resulting in Charlie’s exile in France. The traditional Scottish song Speed Bonnie Boat tells how he escaped in a small boat from South Uist to Skye, helped by Flora MacDonald.
