Seventy-eight 12th century chess pieces were found on the Hebridean Isle of Lewis in 1831. Most of them are carved from walrus ivory, some are carved from whale teeth. The chess pieces were probably made in Norway.
When you look at them, kneel down or crouch in such a way that you can look through the glass straight into their faces and look them in the eye. You will see human beings across the passage of time.
