Migration from a Scottish perspective: some emigration was forced.
A shift from small-scale agriculture to more profitable sheep farming by landowners during the 18th and 19th centuries forced a significant number of people from the Highlands. These “Highland Clearances” resulted in emigration of Highlanders to the coast, the Scottish Lowlands, and further afield to North America and Australasia.
I designed all of the fabrics used in this quilt, which features runrigs and hardy, Warhol-esque Blackface Sheep. Fabric is available to buy from Spoonflower.
