“Abyss” is from the Greek word ἄβυσσος, meaning bottomless. The abyssal zone of the oceans – 4-6 km – is perpetually dark and cold and silent. Inhabitants, such as the deep-sea anglerfish and the giant squid, must withstand immense pressure. The deepest trenches in the ocean, such as the Mariana Trench in the Pacific, are in the hadal zone (from Hades, the underworld in Greek mythology), 6km and below.
The deeps are virtually unexplored. In 1960, the bathyscaphe Trieste reached the bottom of Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, the deepest known part of the oceans. Deepsea Challenger reached the bottom of Challenger Deep in March, 2012.
