Abel Janszoon Tasman (1603–1659) was a Dutch seafarer, explorer and merchant, best known for his voyages of 1642 and 1644. He was the first known European explorer to reach the islands of Van Diemen’s Land (now Tasmania) and New Zealand, and to sight the Fiji islands.
Tasman’s crew were the first Europeans to have a confirmed encounter with Maori. It ended badly in Golden Bay, with deaths on both sides. This image features the Tasman Map, which shows Tasman’s voyages, and some Maori waka.
